KUCHKORAK – KAYAKALAK panels
Weaving the Uzbek KUCHKORAK – KAYAKALAK
The KUCHKORAK – KAYAKALAK series will be produced at base camp in Andijan using 200 x 140cm yak and sheep felt cuts used to cover and isolate yurts.
While using Lapiz lazuli pigment sourced locally I will develop techniques that interconnect weaving and painting motifs as I research and reimagine what is known as the Steppe Mandala, a unitarian tribal medallion called the KAYAKALAK.
The series will be completed in collaboration with Uzbek women weavers of the Dashti Kipchak Turkic tradition, descendents of the Kungrat tribes still withholding designs dating back to the 10th century.
The Venice KUCHKORAK – KAYAKALAK exhibition will be curated by Sveva Manfredi Zavaglia and set to open alongside the main installation.
