KAYAKALAK

Weaving the  KAYAKALAK Panels

The KAYAKALAK series will be produced at base camp in Bishkek  using  200 x 140cm yak and sheep-felt cuts used to cover and isolate yurts.

While using pigment sourced locally I will develop techniques that interconnect weaving and painting motifs as I research and reimagine what is known as the Steppe Mandala, a unitarian tribal medallion called the KAYAKALAK. The series will be completed in collaboration with traditional Kyrgyz women weavers of the Naryn Region.
